Events And Fund Raisers To Help Support The Range
BUFFALO DAYS JUNE 16, 2007
HISTORIC RE-ENACTMENTS ON THE BISON RANGE COMING IN JUNE
The day long event will begin at 9:00a.m. and conclude at sundown. Guided Prairie Tours, native wildlife and historic displays, living history re-enactments, nature walks, and other activities throughout the day will be offered. Call 620-276-9400 for pricing details.
The Guided Prairie Tours will feature Ken Weidner and his son portraying Cheyenne braves on hunt, Mark Berry and Kirk Shapland, presenting an authentic reproduction of a buffalo hunter camp and an 1868 frontier infantry camp reproduction by Karl Grover and Ron Drummond. Guided tours of the resident bison herd and nature walks will also be part of the tour package. Tour guides will escort visitors to the herd providing historical and natural history information on the bison and their prairie home. Each tour will take approximately 1-2 hours depending on how close the herd is to the loading zone. A “Sunset on the Prairie” tour will be the final activity for the day. Early reservations for the tours are encouraged as space may be limited.
Displays to visit during the day from 9:00a.m.- 6:00p.m. will include native Kansas Wildlife featuring “Kansas Critters” courtesy of Lee Richardson Zoo, “Buffalo Jones” one of Garden City’s town founders and bison preservationist by the Finney County Museum, Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks Centennial Celebration History of Wildlife Conservation in Kansas, the history of the Sandsage Bison Range complete with bison facts and artifacts and demonstrations of a virtual fishing simulator and laser hunting simulator will be offered by the staff of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
A concession stand featuring bison burgers and souvenir booth will be sponsored by the Sandsage Bison Range volunteer organization, with all proceeds going to support volunteer efforts in providing prairie and bison ecology education efforts.
A great day for a prairie adventure. Look for this to happen again in 2009!
